The History and Heritage at Eastwood

Eastwood was founded in 1891 or 1893 – the debate continues!

Records show that Eastwood Golf Club was founded in 1891 in Giffnock with the laying of the first greens. However, at the end of 1892, the membership resigned in its entirety and it wasn’t until 1893, with the help of the YMCA that Eastwood was reformed with “Subs 50p a year – but no bar!” – YMCA quote.

From this stuttering start emerged a vital and vigorous Club that has set standards and introduced golfing innovations that have been copied, not just in Scotland – but throughout the world. It was Eastwood that gave the world the three-ball partnership that is now universal practice in medal play the world over.

Relocated in 1936

Theodore Moone designer of Eastwood Golf Course set out to provide “bright and exciting holes … does not contain a single “dud” hole, and could be developed to form one of the most delightful courses in the West of Scotland”.

A trademark of Theodore Moone was the oval tee, which had been gradually eliminated over the years. Eastwood Twelve has made an effort to honour Mr Moone by keeping and reinstating many oval tees. Keep an eye out for them on your next round!

About Eastwood Twelve

The new course at Eastwood Twelve has been largely built on the history and heritage of the former Eastwood Golf Club, from keeping the greenkeepers, to the naming of the holes. This well-loved sporting facility was a top-class, USPGA standard course offering some of the best golfing in the area and we have retained as much of that as possible.

The new course – south-facing and in a valley – has been built on this legacy, affording a premium level of play and providing a memorable and distinctive experience for golfers of all levels.

Nine of the original holes remain alongside one brand new hole, and a few have been tweaked to create Eastwood Twelve’s new course. We now have 12 beautiful new holes – 5 par 3s and 7 par 4s. Three sets of tees offer challenges suitable for all standards of play – particularly comfortable for the high handicapper, while the back tees are challenging for lower handicappers.

We have completely refurbished the existing bridges and have built a few new ones. Every bunker on the course has been reworked by removing the old sand, redoing the drainage, and are filled to the brim with fresh sand.

We are embracing new innovative technology by installing two new Husqvarna automatic robotic lawn mowers which will provide the golfer with the best possible play by cutting the fairways 24 hours, 7 days a week.
